Landscape of the Human Sexual Response Cycle (2019)
Upon the making of Sexuality of Mountains, Hills and Household Objects, Adalı decides to inquire more keenly into the nature of sexuality. The artist’s creative process shaped by methods of heuristic research, also known as artistic inquiry is a phenomenological mode of generating knowledge and seeking truth. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, believed there are multitude of ways of knowing: Theoria, Praxis and Poeisis. It is the artist's job to generate knowledge by poiesis: giving form to the formless. Through the poietic act, the artist not only generates knowledge by giving shape, but also like she constructs a visual poem laden with symbols and metaphors. She taps into parallelism between different domains of experience and generates imagery that sheds light to different dimensions of the subject of inquiry.
In the light of Yasemin Adalı’s research, can we tap into the likeliness/similarity between desire and a volcanic island, orgasmic high to exiting a dark tunnel into bright light? Is there a link between resolution to the lightness of billowing curtains?
With the containment of such naturalistic and ordinary metaphors could sexual experience be demarginalized and free from the male gaze, reveal its potency as a everyday ritual of sacred connection?
The artist uses Masters and Johnson’s Model of Sexual Arousal, namely The Human Sexual Response Cycle, composed of four distinct stages: Arousal, Plaeteu, Orgasm, Resolution. There is a geographical innuendo beneath the selected words for each stage. Arousal hints at rising, plato a high land, orgasm to a peak, resolution to a free fall. There is an inherent landscape and inner geography waiting to be revealed in the sexual experience and Adalı makes an attempt to reveal this hidden topography.
