DEFANS is a work-in-progress. Below text provides a window into my process of contextualization.
The fence is a boundary. It determines what is inside and what is left outside. It declares a space as private, not as public; mine and not yours.
Like a cell membrane, it is a barrier. Depending on its permeability (Penetrability, porousness, transparency) the fence limits access to what is inside to varying degrees, and thereby it prevents intrusion via entrance or gaze. This way, the fence creates a shelter, an undisturbed contained environment, the safety of which may be perceived or actual.
